ART
There are many original artworks displayed on the walls at Cleburne, including paintings by Tasmanian artists John Lendis, Peter Stephenson, Wayne Brooks, Helen Hopcroft and Penelope Ann . There are also paintings by mainland artists Marina Pribaz, Marisse Maas and Heath Lander.
Penelope and David travel interstate regularly to art exhibitions and have visited galleries and museums in Europe, America and England. Penelope is a painter and ex-art teacher and has had a number of Group and Solo exhibitions in Melbourne and Hobart. Hobart has many serious art galleries and David and Penelope are happy to recommend.
During your stay at Cleburne we encourage you to visit MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art in Berriedale. Our 'Things To Do' page will take you to other Galleries that we recommend in Hobart.

MONA
MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art is the 200 million dollar brainchild of eccentric multi-millionaire gambler David Walsh. Walsh commissioned architect Nonda Katsalidis to create the building, filled it with his own art (a hugely altruistic thing to do), and made it admission free for Tasmanians. Walsh has a fascination with Darwinian evolution, time, ancient cultures and the dark areas of our humanity. Death and sex are predominant themes in his collection.
The museum has been created by excavating a giant hole in the sandstone bluffs of Moorilla. From the water it looks formidable - a fortress of impenetrable bunkers of sandstone and coloured panels of rusted steel. You enter MONA via a renovated 1940's residence complete with lighthouse shaped fireplace.
Aesthetically, you're impressed before you even get to the artworks.
MONA is a truly unique experience, a world class museum that would be at home in New York or Berlin. Instead it's home is on a riverbank, half an hour by ferry from Hobart, just five minutes drive from Cleburne Homestead. Unlike a traditional museum or art gallery, the works are not arranged chronologically, 2000 year old artifacts rub shoulders with avante-garde artworks. After you've experienced MONA and all it has to offer, you can indulge yourself with a meal at The Source restaurant, or do some wine and beer tasting at the Moorilla Estate Winery and Moo Brew boutique brewery.
